How To Cut A Guinea Pigs Nails(by:Aruna)

Updated: Sep 24, 2022

Cutting a guinea pig's nails may seem daunting and scary at first but once you get the hang of it the process isn't that tedious. It takes all 5 simple steps.

  1. First, make sure to get a good pair of nail clippers meant for guinea pigs, you can get some at your local pet store or online. If your pair feels cheap, flimsy, or poorly made please don't use it, it may harm your guinea pig.

  2. A guinea pig's nail does have blood (called a quick)in its nails so you only need to clip the smallest bit about once a month. When you start there are two ways to cut guinea pig's nails that you should avoid. First, cut it down, or across look at the reference photo to see the correct angle. *Tip: if your guinea pig has white nails you should be able to see where the blood is. You should NOT cut too much off at once. Your guinea pig could be very hurt.

  3. To get your guinea pig to stay still you can feed them a few veggies to get them to hold still. If your pig is sensitive and hates his nails being cut I would bring him to the vet to get it done, however, most pigs should be fairly easy. If you need to have another person hold your pig while you cut his/hers nails.

  4. After you cut their nails make sure to give them a little treat and a kiss <3

Thank you for reading I will include a few links to a few different pairs that should work wonderfully for pig!
