Bonding Boars: Fails & Successes (By: Aruna)

Bonding your boars(males) is a very difficult process. Bonding sows(females) is a lot easier. When bonding to boars one boar will be the dominant one and the other will "submit" basically recognizing the other as the dominant one of the two. Bonding guinea pigs isn't as easy as sticking to guinea pigs together and them loving each other. It's a lengthy process that can be very difficult. But hopefully, the steps below can help!

*If you have a pig 1 year or over and you try bonding them with a baby pig is so much easier because the baby normally always submits*

  1. First, have a floor time area that's large and spacious. Make sure it doesn't have any other pigs smells. It needs to be a completely neutral space. You can use grids or a cat or dog floor time area.

  2. Put nothing in the area but hay. No hideys, tunnels, or toys because your pigs can get territorial.

  3. Before you put the pigs in the floor time area wrap one of your hands with a towel or thick fabric because if there is any tornadoing or skirmishes you can break it up.

  4. Put the most anxious pig in first, let them have a minute to get used to their surroundings *but not too long they may think its their area will get territorial* maybe 5 minutes or less. Then put the other pig in.

  5. Don't get involved unless there are any fights. To break up the fights push the piggies apart gently with your hand wrapped with a thick material.

*WARNING: if there is any blood or injury or over-aggressive behavior split the piggies up because they can't bond or need more time*

If the bonding is going successfully your piggies will need hours or days in the floor time area before they are ready to move into the cage with another piggie.

Remember bonds need to be nurtured and can break over time. However, most bonds are forever and filled with love and piggie cuddles. Remember the main thing with boar bonds is they get territorial. If you have any questions you can contact us or comment below!
